CHANDIGARH: Punjab will on Tuesday start conjugal visits for jail inmates with good conduct from three prisons, becoming perhaps the first state in the country to allow prisoners an opportunity for some intimacy with their spouses during incarceration.
The average time of such visits will be two hours. Such visits shall be allowed once in two months, subject to availability of infrastructure in prisons. The initiative will kick off from the Goindwal Sahib central jail (in Tarn Taran district), the womenโ€™s jail at Bathinda and a new district jail at Nabha. The facility will be extended to six more jails by this month-end.
Punjab jails minister Harjot Singh Bains pointed out that conjugal jail visits were permitted in many countries, including the US, Germany, Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Brazil, France and Denmark.
He told GLOBAL PRABHAT that this initiative by the AAP government was meant to improve the conduct of prisoners, encourage stronger family bonds, reduce the negative impact of imprisonment and improve prisonersโ€™ chances of rehabilitation in the society.
