CHENNAI: A man murdered his grandmother, at Korrukupet on Tuesday, after she had fed him his favourite lunch of fish curry and rice, angered by her insistence that he return 1lakh that his mother had borrowed. He then bolted the doors of the house and watched TV while she bled to death.
Police identified the woman as Visalakshi, 70, who lived alone at a house on Karumariamman Nagar Second Street in Korukkupet. The assailant was her daughter Amudha‘s son Sathish, 28. After lunch Visalakshi and Sathish had an argument about the money and Satish slashed her with a blade and hit her with a hammer.
When a neighbour came to ask about the noise, Sathish blamed it on the TV and said his grandmother had gone out. He then locked the house and sat watching TV, while his grandmother lay injured. After a while he called up his mother and said Visalakshi had been injured in a fall. His mother rushed to Korrukupet and took Visalakshi to the Stanley government hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
When police went to Visalakshi’s home, Sathish was still watching TV in a drunken stupor. The RK Nagar police registered a case and arrested Sathish. They seized the blade and hammer used to kill Visalakshi. Sathish was remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
Police said Visalakshi had been pressing Sathish and Amudha to return the 1 lakh, which she had given them to construct a new house four years ago. Amudha had borrowed money from others too to build a house at Red Hills. As she was unable to repay the money, Amudha was forced to sell her new house and settle the loans. She gave 1 lakh to her mother and promised to return the remaining 1 lakh at the earliest.
However, she delayed the payment and Visalakshi had called and abused her daughter and grandson several times, police said.
