This time Wikipedia is on the target of Russia. In fact, the Moscow court has again fined Wikipedia for refusing to remove a Russian-language article related to the attack on Ukraine. Russia alleges that Wikipedia did not report objectively. Angered by this, the court has imposed a fine on Wikipedia.

Fined 20 lakh rubles

The Court has taken this step to prevent fair reporting or criticism of the war and to hinder the Russian public’s access to information. Court fines Wikimedia Foundation, a non-governmental organization that runs a free and publicly edited online encyclopedia, 2 million rubles ($24,464) for not removing a Wikipedia article titled ‘Russia’s occupation of Zaporizhzhya region’ .

There was a demand for the removal of the article

On this decision of the court, the state Tass news agency said that Russia’s state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor had demanded the removal of articles containing false information from Wikipedia, which Wikipedia refused to remove. According to the news agency, a representative of Wikipedia has asked the court to reject the demand for the removal of the article, calling it vague. In recent years, Russian President Vladimir Putin has increased his crackdown on criticism and factual reporting that does not match his government’s views.
