‘Government employees are like school children’, Madras High Court said – always keep an eye on holidays

High Court on Public Holiday Ambedkar Jayanti: The Madras High Court recently said that there is no difference between government employees and school children. The court said that government employees are like school children, who always keep an eye on government holidays and exemption from work. Justice GR Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court made these remarks while hearing a petition related to the national holiday declared on Ambedkar Jayanti.

High Court Justice GR Swaminathan said that the state government declared April 14 as a national holiday to honor the sentiments of the citizens on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. He said that Dr. BR Ambedkar himself would have wanted people to do more and more work.

On which petition was the hearing held?

The Madurai High Court bench made these remarks on a petition filed by the employees union of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The High Court said that government employees are like school children. For them, getting holidays and exemption from work is always welcome.

In this petition, the employees union of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant demanded that they should get double allowance for the work they had done on April 14, 2018. However, on behalf of the High Court, the director of this project was instructed to give him financial benefits.

‘We believe in emotions and symbols’

During the hearing, the High Court said that Dr. Ambedkar was such a person, who wanted people to work hard instead of declaring a holiday on his birth anniversary. We followed a system of sentiments and symbols. He believed in etiquette rather than efficiency. The court said that the country cares a lot for symbolism and sentiments.

The court said, “Courtesy is our identity rather than efficiency. Like Bharat Ratna Shri APJ Abdul Kalam, he (Ambedkar) must have said don’t declare a holiday on my death, instead work an extra day, if you love me.” We do.”
