SC issues notice to Delhi Police on demand for FIR against Anurag Thakur and Pravesh Verma

Supreme Court Notice: The Supreme Court has issued a notice on the demand for registering an FIR against BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Pravesh Verma and has also sought answers from the Delhi Police. In the petition of CPM leader Brinda Karat, the inflammatory statements of both the MPs have been cited against the anti-CAA movement in 2020. Earlier, the lower court and the High Court had rejected his petition.

Justice Joseph has also taken note of Anurag Thakur’s ‘Shoot’ comment. The Supreme Court said, “I believe that traitor means traitor? Shoot here was definitely not related to medicine. To this the lawyer said, “Yes, its approval is an issue in itself why should the court consider it?”

What did the lawyers say in the Supreme Court?

The lawyer in the Supreme Court said, “Availability of alternative treatment should not have been the basis for not hearing in the High Court. Please see what was said. This thing was said in a rally in the context of the protest in Shaheen Bagh. The mention of Gaddar was for the protesters there. The lawyer further said, “Protest group may be secular but the issue concerned was religious. Please see what was said.”

On behalf of the petitioner, Senior Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal approached the court through speeches. “It was calling people to indulge in the most heinous kind of violence,” Agarwal said. On this the Supreme Court said, “Let’s see. If a cognizable offense is made out, the police are bound to register an FIR. If they are doing so, they will have to complete the preliminary inquiry in 7 days.”
