Japan: A panel of the Ministry of Health in Japan has approved the abortion pill for the first time in the country. According to the Japan Times report, the Japanese panel has approved the abortion pill ‘Mefigo Pill’ manufactured by UK’s Linepharma International Limited, although it is yet to get the approval of the Health Minister. The Mephigo pill is being touted as an alternative to surgery amid growing demands for reproductive rights by Japanese women.
According to media reports, a panel of the Ministry of Health conducted an online survey before this decision, in which 12,000 public comments were collected and reviewed. After which this step was announced. According to the Japan Times report, the final approval is expected from the Health Minister.
Abortion pills are available in 80 countries
Significantly, abortion pills have been used in foreign countries for almost 30 years. Abortion pills are available in more than 80 countries. In such a situation, Japan was always criticized for this matter. The Japan Times reported that France was the first country to approve such a bullet in 1988.
The World Health Organization has also supported the abortion pill, saying it is safe, despite this, abortion pills are banned in Japan. Organizations praised the government’s decision
Many organizations have given their response on this initiative of the government. In such a situation, Kumi Tsukahara, director of the Reproductive Health Rights Literacy Institute, said that the government’s decision is positive, but she doubts that this medicine will be available to all. Earlier in January, a preliminary advisory panel of the health ministry had approved the production and sale of packs of the abortion pill.
