Arrested for assaulting priests, protest against disrespect of holy book started

Punjab News: On Monday, April 24, in Morinda city of Rupnagar district of Punjab, there is a state of discontent among the people of the area since the case of assaulting two priests in a gurudwara and disrespecting the Guru Granth Sahib came to light. Although, the Punjab Police has arrested a person in this case, but the anger of the people has not calmed down. After this incident, protests have started at many places in Rupnagar in the city.

The Punjab Police has arrested the accused Jasveer Singh and registered a case against him for inciting religious sentiments and attempt to murder. Leaders of various political parties including Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have strongly condemned the incident. Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest religious body of Sikhs, and Harjinder Singh Dhami, head of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), also condemned the incident. He said that there is a need to take this matter seriously. After the incident, a video of this matter is also being seen a lot on social media. In a viral video on social media, a person named Jasveer Singh can be seen clearly assaulting two granthis reciting Guru Granth Sahib after crossing the railing in the sanctum sanctorum of Kotwali Sahib Gurdwara. After this, Jasveer also insults Guru Granth Sahib. Jasveer Singh was later caught and thrashed by the devotees present in the gurudwara. After this he was handed over to the police. Jasveer is an electrician by profession.

CM Mann appealed to the people to exercise restraint

CM Bhagwant Mann also said that the Morinda incident is highly condemnable. No one will be spared for this. Bhagwant Mann tweeted that whoever has insulted Guru Granth Sahib will be given the harshest punishment. For us the respect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib is first. Along with this, Chief Minister Mann also appealed to the people to exercise restraint. He said that this episode has hurt the psyche of every person who has faith in Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Granth Sahib is supreme for every individual and no one will be allowed to disturb the hard earned peace in the state.

DG Punjab reached Morinda

Bhagwant Mann said that he has also directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure that the investigation into the matter is expedited and the guilty are punished. Senior police officers including Inspector General of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar have reached Morinda to take stock of the situation. Police said that a case has been registered against the accused under sections 295A and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Former Chief Ministers expressed surprise over the incident

After this incident in Rupnagar, resentment spread among the local people. Locals protested outside Morinda police station and demanded severe punishment for the accused. Markets in Morinda city also remained closed in protest against the incident. The protesters also pelted stones at the house of the accused. Apart from former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Charanjit Singh Channi, senior leaders of various political parties, including Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, have expressed surprise over the incident. Also demanded strict punishment to the accused. Regarding this incident, Amarinder Singh tweeted that the incident of sacrilege at Gurudwara Shri Kotwali Sahib in Morinda is highly condemnable. I urge the Punjab Police to immediately arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime and give them the harshest punishment.

blasphemy case troubling

At the same time, Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh has termed it as an unfortunate incident. He has asked the state government to take strict action against the accused. He said that till strict punishment is not ensured for this incident, the incidents of sacrilege will not stop. SGPC chief Dhami said that it is sad that the incidents of sacrilege are not stopping. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal described the incident as ‘painful, extremely disturbing and inexcusable’.

Congress leader appealed for peace to all

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa has demanded the state government to give strict punishment to the accused. Pratap Singh Bajwa has written in his tweet that I am shocked to hear about the sacrilege incident at Gurdwara Sahib in Morinda, Punjab. The person responsible for this has been caught and is in police custody. My appeal to Sangat is to maintain peace and harmony at all costs. I request the Punjab government to give severe punishment to the culprits.
