Parkash Singh Badal Passes Away: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patron Parkash Singh Badal (95) passed away on Tuesday. He was admitted to a private hospital in Mohali about a week ago. He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali after complaining of discomfort in breathing. Badal passed away around eight o’clock in the night.
Born on December 8, 1927 at Abul Khurana near Malot, Parkash Singh Badal graduated from Foreman Christian College, Lahore. His political journey began in 1947 when he became the ‘sarpanch’ of Badal village in Bathinda district. After this he became the chairman of the block committee. During his long political career, Badal served as the chief minister of the state five times (in 1970–71, 1977–80, 1997–2002, 2007–12 and 2012–17).
Badal had lost the election in 2022
Parkash Singh Badal, at the age of 94, became the oldest candidate in the country to contest the state assembly elections last year, when he entered the fray for the 13th time. He, however, could not save his stronghold of Lambi in Muktsar district. This was only his second defeat in a political career spanning over seven decades.

During the years 1975 to 1977, he also went to jail several times under the MISA Act. Apart from this, he also went to jail in protest against the diversion of water from Punjab to Haryana rivers in the eighties. Once, Badal had to go to jail for tearing a copy of the constitution, although later he apologized for insulting the country’s constitution.
MISA Act came into force in 1971
The MISA Act was implemented in the year 1971 but it was used during the Emergency to jail Congress opponents, journalists and social workers. More than one lakh people were arrested under MISA and DRI.
