Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was born on 2 April 1902 in a village named Kesur near Lahore, Pakistan. He was interested in music since childhood. There was more than one musician in his family. His father Ali Baksh Khan was a famous Sarangi player and singer. His uncle was also associated with music. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan took his initial training in music from his uncle. It is said that he used to do Riyaz for 20-20 hours a day.

Career started like this

He started his career playing Sarangi and singing songs written by his uncle. His first concert in the year 1938 changed his life and he started being recognized. He invented a new style of Thumri. ‘Yaad Piya Ki Aaye’, ‘Kate Na Virah Ki Raat’, ‘Tirchi Nazariya Ke Baan’, ‘Aaye Na Balam’ and ‘Kya Karoon Sajni’ are still listened to with great interest by those interested in music.
