‘Don’t create an atmosphere of fear’, Supreme Court reprimanded ED, know what is the whole matter

Supreme Court: The Supreme Court on Tuesday (May 16) directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) not to create an atmosphere of fear. The top court made this comment while hearing a petition by the Chhattisgarh government. The Chhattisgarh government told the court that several excise officials of the state have complained that they are being threatened to pressurize Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel to implicate him in the liquor irregularities case.

The Chhattisgarh government has demanded to be included as a party in the ongoing petitions in the Supreme Court. A hearing was held on this demand in the bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice A Amanullah.

ED accused of implicating CM

The Chhattisgarh government has alleged that the Enforcement Directorate is trying to frame the CM. The Bhupesh Baghel government told the court that several officials of the state excise department have accused the Enforcement Directorate of threatening to arrest them and their family members.

On behalf of the Chhattisgarh government, senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing in the Supreme Court said that “the Enforcement Directorate is in a panic and is threatening the excise officials.” He called it a shocking situation.

ED told the allegations wrong

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju appeared before the bench on behalf of the Enforcement Directorate. Rejecting the allegations, he said that the probe agency is probing liquor irregularities.

The bench asked the ED not to create an atmosphere of fear among the excise officials. The bench remarked that due to such behaviour, even a genuine reason comes under suspicion.

What is the matter?

The Enforcement Directorate is probing liquor irregularities in the state between 2019 and 2022 in which corruption was allegedly done. It has been said in the allegations that bribes were collected from the distillers instead of buying liquor.

ED’s investigation has revealed that Arun Pati Tripathi along with his other associates made policy changes at the behest of Anwar Dhebar and gave tenders to Anwar Dhebar’s associates so that maximum profit could be earned.
