How will a new record be made like this? Big shock to the government in the first month itself, this work reduced by 75%

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is laying great emphasis on the development of infrastructure in the country. Especially the government is paying more attention to the means of transport. For this reason, a target has been set to create a new record for the construction of highways in the current financial year. However, the beginning of the year has been very bad and in the first month of the current financial year i.e. April 2023, there has been a huge decline of 75 percent in construction.

Heavy decline compared to March

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, during the month of April only around 500 kilometers of highways were constructed in the country. Earlier, during the last month of the last financial year i.e. March 2023, 2,250 km of highways were constructed in the country. During the last month of the last financial year, the agencies had put full emphasis on making roads, so that the target of the previous financial year could be achieved. However, even after that the government had lagged behind the target.

There may be a setback in the third year as well.

The manner in which the current financial year has started has deepened the apprehension that the target of highway construction may not be achieved for the third consecutive year. According to the statistics of the ministry, a total of 523 km of highways were constructed in the month of April. This works out to an average of 17.4 km per day, while the government has set a target of constructing more than 45 km of highways on an average per day during the current financial year.

There was a shortage even a year ago

Earlier, the worst record of highway construction was in April last year, when only 578 km of highway could be constructed. However, the main reason for last year’s decline was the third wave of the Corona epidemic. This time there has been no disruption due to the pandemic, but in terms of construction, the government and government agencies have lagged behind even compared to last year.

Has improved in the last 9 years

However, in the long term, the construction of highways has increased in the country. About 50,000 kilometers of national highways have been constructed in the last nine years. The total length of national highways in the country till 2014-15 was 97,830 km, which increased to 1,45,155 km in March 2023. In the year 2014-15, where 12.1 kilometers of road construction was being done daily, in 2021-22 the speed of road construction in the country increased to 28.6 kilometers per day.

These records have been made

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is failing to achieve the target of construction of roads for the last two consecutive financial years. Earlier, during the financial year 2020-21, the record of making roads at the fastest speed was established. During the financial year 2020-21, 13,298 km long roads were constructed. This means that 36.4 km of roads were constructed everyday during this period.
