Kashmir’s famous ski resort ready to host G20 delegation, first major event after 2019

G-20 Meet In Gulmarg: Kashmir’s famous ski resort – Gulmarg is all set to host a major international event for the first time in many decades. Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) officials have said that all necessary arrangements have been made to welcome the delegates of the high-profile G20 event at the famous ski resort.

The third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting under the chairmanship of India is being held in the Kashmir Valley from 22 to 24 May. While the discussions during the three-day program will be held in Srinagar. Foreign delegates will also be taken on a sightseeing tour of the ski resort of Gulmarg on 23 May.

Gulmarg Development Authority CEO Ghulam Jilani Zargar said that the tourist destination is fully prepared to receive the delegation. The local people also welcomed the event, saying that the summit would give a boost to the tourism sector, especially Gulmarg.

Tariq Ahmad, a local tour operator from Gulmarg said, “We have seen a record arrival of 1.40 lakh tourists this April. We often see the arrival of domestic tourists, but this grand event will attract the attention of the world. The delegates who come will act as our ambassadors in their respective countries.”

“We will be welcomed with open arms. The G20 summit will open up new horizons of opportunities for the local people and boost the tourism industry of the region,” he said.

Rejuvenation of Gulmarg

Gulmarg area has been completely rejuvenated. Chairman Municipal Corporation Abdul Karim Dar said, priority is being given to repair roads, footpaths, beautification as well as to ensure smooth operation of lights on the roads.

Roads are being decorated, hoardings have been put up. Welcome boards and signages have also been put up in Gulmarg. The area is being given a facelift with wall paintings along the road from Srinagar to Gulmarg and the Narbal-Gulmarg stretch, Dar said.

Cable car ticket sold for over Rs 1 crore

After the announcement of Gulmarg as the venue of the G20 meeting, the tourist destination witnessed huge footfall in the month of April itself. Officials said that the sale of tickets for the gondola cable car crossed the Rs 1 crore mark for the first time, which usually used to be around Rs 40,000.

The official Twitter handle of Deputy Commissioner Baramulla wrote that Gulmarg is ready to welcome the delegates for the upcoming G20 meeting. All the preparations are in the final stage of completion.

Gulmarg is a famous tourist station

Gulmarg is a popular hill station located in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, it is a famous tourist destination which is known for skiing. The city is located within the limits of the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas.

The G20 meeting in Srinagar will be the first major international event in Kashmir since August 2019, when Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. During the event, a major event will also be organized to highlight film tourism, which the administration has been promoting in a big way over the past few years.
